What are Escape Rooms?

If you’ve ever heard of escape rooms but have no idea what they are; if your friends or work colleagues won’t stop talking about that fun room they ‘escaped’ from; if you’re wondering what all the fuss is about and you’re eager to know more, you’ve come to the right place. Today’s post is all about what escape rooms are, and why you should be adding them to your list of things to do and places to visit. If you enjoy challenging games that include teamwork, problem-solving, puzzles, clues and racing against clock, or perhaps you’ve even played these types of games online or in board game form, then you’re going to love this.

What to expect.

Escape Rooms are like a live action board game. Instead of sitting at a table with friends, you’re working together to actively search a room, or rooms, finding puzzles and clues and solving a mystery. The rooms are generally built around themes such as magic, mystery or murder, and the rooms are furnished to reflect the theme. Escape rooms should be a fun, immersive experience, which gets the adrenaline going as you work against the clock to find the right puzzle pieces, put clues together and solve the riddles.

The perfect team is between 2-6 players, depending on the size of the room, and is a balanced mix of problem solvers. Some people are great at finding hidden clues and secret drawers; some players thrive on word play riddles; some are analytical thinkers. The strongest team is one which uses the skills of all the players, communicates effectively, and works together to solve the mystery and find their way out in time.

Once you’ve worked you way through the puzzles, and the story of the room, the ultimate aim of the game is to escape. And you have just 60 minutes to do this.

Can’t get out within the hour?

Don’t worry about not being able to escape the room this time. Many of our rooms are challenging, and many of our customers simply come back and try again! We’re always encouraging our customers to try our other rooms, because every room is different. It’s all about the fun, excitement and intrigue these games inspire that makes you want to come back and try again and again.

Themes.

Rooms are built to be immersive experiences, telling a story through the rooms’ props, furnishings and surroundings or the puzzles you have to solve. Themes can be absolutely anything, but are often either based on fun mystery themes, such as detectives, murder mysteries, spies or criminals, or are taken from popular culture. The room could be something from a popular TV show, book or comic series. It could be something out of science fiction, Harry Potter, fairy tales, or have a looser theme such as contagion, horror, magic or any one of a myriad of other topics. They will be decorated with all the props and furnishings that make it look very much like you’re on a film set. It’s created that way so you get the most immersive experience possible.

And if the mood takes you, feel free to pretend to be characters from whichever theme you’re in - we don’t judge!
